Most people switch to vaping because they want to quit smoking cigarettes. But the question remains, is vaping really any better for you, or is it even in the same ball park as smoking cigarettes? In this article we will outline the health and safety differences between vaping nicotine/herbal blends and smoking cigarettes/herbal blends.
When smoking cigarettes, you’re not only taking in tar, but also carcinogens. Tobacco cigarettes contain thousands of harmful chemicals, in which more than 65 have been proven to cause cancer. These chemicals will damage any organ that they come in contact with. It is widely known that cigarettes can cause anything from a small cough to fatal disease. Smoking tobacco kills around 6 million people around the world every year, according to cancer.org.
In the AHA’s(American Heart Association’s) statement that was published in 2014, the AHA stated that electronic cigarettes are less hazardous than actual tobacco cigarettes, and that they can actually help smokers quit. Here is an excerpt from the report:
“E-cigarettes either do not contain or have lower levels of several tobacco-derived harmful and potentially harmful constituents compared with cigarettes and smokeless tobacco… [e-cigarettes] present an opportunity for harm reduction if smokers use them as substitutes for cigarettes.”(AHA)
The social aspect is just another huge upside to vaporizing. We all have those friends that don’t even want to hang around the smokers because they come inside smelling like nasty cigarettes, not to mention if you have to ride in the car with them etc. However vapor does not smell bad at all like cigarette smoke does. I even have people that don’t vape tell me they love the smell. Vaping also does not discolor your teeth or make your breath smell bad like cigarettes. It is obviously more socially accepted. You should still make sure you know the local laws of your area before vaping in public places.
Now let’s underline why vaping herbal blends or nicotine is safer than smoking it.
Health and safety-
The most studied change in safety between smoking and vaping is the way that your product(herbal or tobacco/nicotine) is created and delivered. When smoking tobacco or even herbal blends the tobacco or herbs are combusted when the user burns his or her tobacco/herbal blend to create the smoke.
This smoke that the user is creating has created carcinogens that are present and very unhealthy. Where as with vapor you usually don’t have any carcinogens at all because you didn’t burn anything. Now not all vaporizing products heat their product without combusting, if you get into high wattage (competition) vaporizers that are known to go up to 200+ watts, you can have combustion happen. However there is absolutely no need for anywhere near 200 watts to vaporize. Anywhere between 60-80 Watts seems to be perfect for me, and also much healthier.
Now, whether or not you are vaping your herbals, or vaping nicotine, either one will most likely save you a lot of money in the long run. If you smoke a pack a day, that is almost 2000 a year, where as you might spend a one time cost of 100-200 on your vaporizer. And then all you need is to buy e-liquid and coils every once in a while. Even if you are vaporizing herbal blends in place of smoking them, you will still save a lot of money as the vaporization process uses much lower temperatures than smoking, which will conserve your precious herbal materials.
Vaporizing is obviously the winner in almost every aspect we have talked about(Health and safety, cost effectiveness, and social acceptance). However it will be 4-5 more years before we can truly know the long term effects of vaping, but we surely can conclude that it is safer than smoking tobacco or herbal blends. However do not forget that whether you are vaping nicotine or vaping safer herbal blends, you must keep the vapor out of contact with children and pets, as it can harm them even more then it harms you.
